If you had your reservations about this movie like I had, and as I imagine, many others did about rebooting the franchise before the last one had fizzled out, I would like to tell you know that after seeing this latest treatment of the character, I’m on board! Loved it!
This was a compelling retelling of the origin of the story with an added twist of the lingering subplot about Peter’s parents. The movie built on this subplot as well as the Peter’s search for the murderer of his Uncle Ben.
I’ve been dying to see the Scorpion done right on the big screen (since he hasn’t been done yet, he hasn’t been done right, that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it!) and one of the things that I felt was missing was the link to the Daily Bugle. I think that this film could have spent a minute establishing the relationship of Jonah and his distaste for Spider-Man leading to the creation of the Scorpion in subsequent films.
Now I haven’t read a Spider-Man comic story arch since Erik Larsen left the title for image all of those years ago, so I have no idea what is cannon and what is being made for the movie, but I like the tone and more adult nature of the story presented. The performances of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were just great, creating endearing characterizations that i liked and would want to see them succeed as a couple . .. now that’s acting!
That said, I thought that the Peter’s reveal to Gwen was a little awkward but nicely done. One other thing that was established was that Peter didn’t invent the spider fluid. He took it from Ozcorp and made re-purposed it for his own needs. The design of the Lizard was great until you get to his face, I just thought that it looked a little silly, not so menacing. But these are all minor things that really don’t kill the identity of the character or the new franchise.
I think that they have revolutionized the character for a new era of fans despite the timing of the reboot.
Awesome stuff go out and see it if you have the the time and support great entertainment!
